Today - Somaliland's Election 2024

Elections for the office of the president will take place in Somaliland on the 13th of November 2024. Incumbent President of the Kulmiye party Muse Bihi Abdi will be running for a second and final term in office, alongside opposition candidates, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi of the Waddani party, and Faysal Ali Warabe of UCID party.

The last of which was that in 2018. The election was the fourth direct presidential elections held in the country after the year 2003, but after being postponed for two years. The Re-emergence of the Las Anod conflict against SSC-Khatumo which commenced in late October 2022 raises concerns which some observers about the civil war having implications on the elections process and the peace of the region.

Based on the principles enunciated in its constitution, Somaliland holds presidential elections after every five years. On 24 September 2022, the National Electoral Commission declared the election dates postponed, what was previously scheduled for 13 November 2022, was pushed to July 2023. On 1 October 2022, the House of Elders agreed to delay further the elections by two years rather than the nine months recommended by the National Electoral Commission therefore placing the elections in November 2024. On 8 January 2024, the members of House of Elders reached a compromise on some of the election-specific issues, and the election was announced to take place on 13 November 2024.

Having first been elected in 2017, the current President of Somaliland Muse Bihi Abdi of Kulmiye Peace, Unity, and Development Party (Kulmiye) has a right to run for a second and last term in office. He was confirmed as his party’s candidate by the party’s 2023 convention that was held in Burco City. President Bihi will be running along side a new running mate, Minister of Commerce Mohamoud Hassan Saajin.

This is caused by the fact that Vice President Abdirahman Saylici has served his term limit of two terms as Vice President, serving one term under President Silanyo and then a second one under President Bihi. The two opposition parties of Waddani and the UCID have also announced their respective candidates for the presidency. Once again, Waddani party will be represented by Abdirahman Mohamed Irro, the same individual who was the parties candidate in 2017. Faysal Ali Warabe will run as the UCID candidate for the fourth consecutive time, therefore, he is the only individual that has been a candidate in every direct presidential election in Somaliland since 2003.

Abdi’s campaign has more emphasis on lobbying for diplomatic recognition of Somaliland while that of Abdullahi on democratic reforms and social inclusion, and that of Warabe on national integration. Somaliland’s ambassador to Kenya, Mohamed A. Mohamoud, revealed that the territory was hopeful that recently elected US President Donald Trump would support its quest to become a sovereign state separate from Somalia. The elections also set out to ascertain the viability of a deal with Ethiopia which sought to lease a naval facility at the Port of Berbera in exchange for “further evaluation” of recognition to the Republic of Somaliland.

The direct voting started on the 13th of November 2024. As per the conducted interviews with local, primary issues addressed by the voters focused on the economy/inflation, food drought, and employment. It was estimated that the number of voters who would experienced was over a million in more than two thousand polling centers. Bihi went to the polling station and voted, wishing for a ‘peaceful transfer of power in democracy’.
